Deep Vein Thrombosis / Chronic Occlusions

IMPORTANT: The overviews are provided for informational purposes only and should not be used as a substitute for talking with your doctor. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider for a complete discussion of these conditions as well as the benefits and risks of any treatment options.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)  is a blood clot in a deep vein, most commonly in the lower extremities (leg, thigh, pelvis) but can also occur in the upper extremities. If untreated, it poses a serious risk of pulmonary embolism (PE). DVTs can lead to chronic complications, such as Post Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS). A Chronic Occlusion refers to a vein that remains blocked for a long time after DVT, permanently blocking or severely limiting blood flow.
